Pioneering use of the cloud for development of Collaborative Drug Discovery (CDD) Database
CDD are pleased to announce the publication of a chapter in a new book called Collaborative Computational Technologies for Biomedical Research, edited by our Collaborations Director Sean Ekins, Maggie A.Z. Hupcey (previously PA Consulting, Now Novartis Vaccines) and Antony J. Williams (Royal Society of Chemistry) and published by Wiley. Sean blogged on how this book came to be, inspired by a little conference called “Drug Discovery: Easing Chemistry Bottleneck” held in 2009 at which Sean gave a talk about CDD.
The book includes 28 chapters by experts in the field describing collaborative software, case histories and varied informatics perspectives. The editors also put together a presentation which describes the book in more detail. Wiley has a couple of sample chapters online (1 and 25) that give a flavor of the content. The book includes a foreword from CDD board member Dr. Alpheus Bingham, a founder and member of the board of directors at Innocentive. This sets the scene for why the pharmaceutical industry needs such technologies.
The CDD Chapter co-authored by Ekins, Moses Hohman and Barry Bunin describes the pioneering use of the cloud for development of Collaborative Drug Discovery (CDD) Database. It includes a history of the company, advantages of cloud based systems, and describes the use for neglected diseases like Tuberculosis and Malaria. In addition the authors discuss how companies changing their business model may require increased collaboration and tools like CDD. You can read more on the flyer (and get a discount).
This blog is authored by members of the CDD Vault community. CDD Vault is a hosted drug discovery informatics platform that securely manages both private and external biological and chemical data. It provides core functionality including chemical registration, structure activity relationship, chemical inventory, and electronic lab notebook capabilities!
