Here at CDD, we've acknowledged the importance of collaboration in advancing drug discovery research. While our software can function as a stand-alone database for archiving and mining public data, researchers have the ability to take their work to the next level and selectively collaborate with their peers.
Around the globe, the idea of collaboration in the field of drug discovery research is gathering momentum. In the last year, an organization called the Pistoia Alliance (named for the city in Tuscany where the group held its first meeting) has put forth the bold notion of collaboration between large pharmaceutical companies. Currently, members of the discovery informatics teams of GSK, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Novartis are on board. They have established a non-profit organization and a wiki group on SourceForge.net.
It will be clear at some point that the alliance will open up to new members who believe in the ideology of sharing elements of the drug discovery research pipeline. As a truly collaborative operation, projects undertaken by Pistoia will be determined based on the collective input of all of its members. It will be exciting to witness the results of this alliance!
