Powering Global Health Research with CDD Vault: A TropIQ Case Study

    Introduction to TropIQ Health Sciences

TropIQ Health Sciences, a spin-off from Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands, is on a mission to combat vector-borne diseases through innovative drug discovery platforms. With unique capabilities to screen against every life stage of the malaria parasite, TropIQ supports both in-house and partnered R&D efforts targeting malaria, dengue, and emerging tick-borne diseases.

To manage the complexity and scale of this work, TropIQ implemented CDD Vault—a centralized informatics platform that transformed how the company captures, connects, and uses its vast experimental datasets.

Findings: Spreadsheet Chaos and the Need for a Smarter System

TropIQ’s work generates enormous volumes of compound, screening, and biological data. Yet for years, that data lived across Excel files, paper notebooks, and scientists’ memories, making it nearly impossible to trace compound activity, analyze experiments, or generate reports.

“We were struggling in-house. It wasn’t feasible to retrieve all the data we needed from memory, Excel spreadsheets, and paper notebooks.”

    — Koen Dechering, Ph.D., CEO, TropIQ

After experiencing the advantages of CDD Vault through early collaborations, TropIQ quickly recognized its value. By 2019, the platform was officially adopted as the company’s primary data repository.

A Centralized Platform for Chemistry and Biology

CDD Vault gave TropIQ a searchable, structured environment to register compound libraries, link them with screening data, and trace experiment history with confidence. Today, the platform manages tens of thousands of compounds and associated results from hit-to-lead and lead optimization campaigns.

    • Problem: Unstructured data made it difficult to track compounds, identify trends, or generate reports without extensive manual work.
    • Solution: CDD Vault consolidated chemical and biological data in one secure, searchable location—eliminating redundancy and unlocking deeper insights.

“Having everything in the Vault means that data is easily findable, accessible, and searchable—even months later.”

    — Koen Dechering, Ph.D.

Streamlining Daily Workflows and Reducing Errors

CDD Vault reduced risk by minimizing the need to copy and paste between spreadsheets, graphics tools, and reporting systems. Equipment like plate readers can now output data directly into Vault-compatible formats, freeing up scientists’ time and reducing error-prone manual steps.

“We can program equipment to generate Vault-ready data files, ensuring minimal manipulation between raw data and what’s stored.”

    — Koen Dechering, Ph.D.

Supporting Cross-Institutional Collaboration in Global Health

One key project example involved TropIQ synthesizing and screening novel antimalarial compounds in partnership with a university organic chemistry department. CDD Vault enabled both partners to share and analyze compound and assay data in real time, supporting informed decision-making and new synthesis planning.

As TropIQ expands its work into biologics, the platform's flexible architecture also supports registering DNA sequences like primers—future-proofing the system as research areas diversify.

Accelerating Research in Neglected Diseases and Beyond

Originally focused on malaria, TropIQ has since grown to address a wider range of vector-borne diseases, including dengue and tick-borne illnesses affecting both livestock and humans. CDD Vault’s ability to handle large datasets from high-throughput screens will be vital as the company increases assay miniaturization and throughput.

“CDD Vault comes into its own as the repository for compounds and results from high-throughput screening assays.”

    — Koen Dechering, Ph.D.

    Conclusion

CDD Vault is now an integral part of TropIQ’s R&D operations, supporting drug discovery for global health through secure data centralization, intuitive searching, and collaborative workflows. What once took days of hunting through files can now be surfaced in seconds, allowing the team to scale, partner, and innovate with clarity.
